Mindfulness Training at Moorpark College - FAQs
What's MT @ MC?
Answer: Mindfulness Training is a project sponsored by the Moorpark College Student Health Center. Our intent is to provide an opportunity for anyone in the Moorpark College community to learn simple mindfulness practices that have proven benefits for your life as a student, a professor, a college administrator or staff person.
When and where does MT meet?
Answer: There are 2 options - do one or both.
(1) In-person sessions held on campus. Fall semester 2016 schedule:
(2) Practice whenever you'd like, wherever you are, via our 8-session online training course, available 24/7.
How often can I come? How often should I come?
You can participate as often as you want. MT runs on an eight-week model with a different topic and a different practice each week. Sessions in a given week focus on the same topic and practice. After eight weeks, the cycle repeats. We all learn best with review and some repetition. You can come to one session each week or as many as you'd like. If you miss a week, come the following week. Come on different days - it's all good and all about doing the practices.
If you're attendng as part of a class assignment or for extra credit, your professor may have given you guidelines for the number of sessions you're required to attend for your particular project or extra credit assignment. However, please keep in mind that the more you practice, the more you'll get out of it. Kind of like the rest of life.
We encourage you to use any requirements as a way to get started, but don't stop there. Mindfulness Training is just like physical training - you have to do it more-or-less regularly for a little while to experience the benefits in your everyday life and continue doing it to sustain and deepen those benefits.
Recent research* on Mindfulness Training programs for college students found significant benefits after 2 to 7 weeks of practicing for about 20 minutes at a time, at least 3 to 4 times a week. Those are pretty broad guidelines, but you can see that while one session a week is good, more is better.
